Chapter 12

“Can you help me out of here?” I beg. I’ve been closer to more dead bodies this year than I care to admit, and while they don’t particularly freak me out - I talk to ghosts, after all - this is the first time I’ve fallen on one. I’m glad there was something to break my fall at least. But at the same time - ick! I just landed on a body.

Juliet and Wendy, their faces etched with concern, drop to their knees, peering into the dark hole as they strain to reach my outstretched hands. Clara calls out instructions from the bus, but of course, they can’t hear her.

“Grab her hand and forearm if you can reach it,” Juliet tells Wendy. “I have this side.” After waiting for Wendy to secure her grip, she takes a deep breath. “On three,” she says. “One, two, three,” she exclaims while they desperately tug on me.

I brace my feet against the dirt walls, but it’s slippery, and I falter, knocking against the side of the hole. A gust of air escapes my lips, creating a resonating whoosh that hangs in the air. The flimsy t-shirt I threw on offers little protection as my bare arms scrape painfully against the rough clay. I’m grateful I’m at least wearing jeans.

“One more time,” Juliet says. “One, two, three,” she grunts as they give it their all to pull me up.

My feet claw at the sides of the slippery hole, but when I discover a dense root, I leverage it to hoist myself out with a heave from my friends, breathing an enormous sigh of relief when my feet finally reach solid ground.

“Are you all right?” Juliet asks, checking me over.

The scraped skin on the back of my arms stings, and I’ll feel the bruises tomorrow, but at least I’m in one piece. “Aside from a few scratches and bruises, I think I’m okay. Especially compared to the guy at the bottom of the hole. It would have been more exciting if you used witchcraft to pull me out, though,” I lecture.

“Do you want us push you in and try again?” Wendy smirks.

“How about I just say thank you?” I tell them.

She smiles. “No problem, friend.”

“All good, Clara!” I shout, raising my arms to show her I’m in one piece.

“Thank goodness!” she exclaims.

“I would have just jumped out,” Mystery informs me.

“Does anybody have cell service out here?” I ask. Do enchanted orchards have cell towers?

“Actually, I do,” Wendy says, peering at her phone.

“We have to call the police.”

“I was afraid you’d say that,” she says, dialing 911, giving them exact instructions on how to find us.

“You’re sure it’s Bellamy?” Juliet asks.

“I’m completely sure.”

“You’re sure he was stabbed?” she continues, her tone telling me she hopes I’m wrong.

I shine my flashlight into the hole, showing the stab wound and the knife. “Completely sure about that too.”

With the police on their way, our silence hangs heavy in the air, each of us lost in our thoughts, the weight of everything we’ve experienced today pressing down on us.
